PlotEdit

Andy gets into hot water with Opie's new teacher Helen Crump.

SummaryEdit

Opie misunderstands a comment Andy makes at the breakfast table and tells his new teacher, "old lady Crump," that according to his pa, history doesn't matter. Helen lays down the law to Sheriff Taylor and Andy responds with his own method of motivating Opie and his friends to study.

Notes/TriviaEdit

  • The character of Helen Crump was supposed to be a one-shot. That is why they gave the character an unpleasant sounding name. But the producers were so impressed with Aneta Corsaut's performance and her rapport with Andy Griffith that they made her a regular cast member.
  • This is the first episode that Aneta Corsaut appears as Helen Crump, Opie's teacher.
  • This episode was the favorite of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation, which Andy asks Barney about, is first mentioned on the show here.
  • Johnny Paul Jason is also "Little Ricky" from the I Love Lucy show. He is Desi Arnaz and Lucy's son.

QuotesEdit

Andy: See that foot. How could that big ole foot, all of it, fit in my mouth?

Andy: The shot was so loud it was heard clear around the world.

Andy: That's a fact, that's how this country got started.

Andy: Form a kind of a troop... a history troop... Mayberry Minutemen.
Opie: Yeah!
Johnny Paul: Hey!
Howie: How ‘bout that!
Whitey: I got a canteen!
Barney: (excited) Will you help us?!?!

Barney: "Well, there were these folks and ... well how else were they gonna get emancipated unless they had a proclamation. So they got themselves a proclamation and they called it the Emancipation Proclamation. I'm surprised at you not knowin' that Anj!"
