Summary[]

Bank robbers posing as Hollywood television producers come to Mayberry.

Plot[]

When an article about Andy entitled Sheriff Without a Gun appears in a magazine, Hollywood soon comes calling with a proposal to do a television series based on his exploits. A producer and his attractive secretary are soon in Mayberry scouting out locations and discussing particular storylines. Barney makes the most of it, bragging about his mostly imaginary exploits, while Andy is his normal self-effacing self. The producers decide that the first episode will be about a bank robbery but Andy soon begins to wonder just why they are so interested in the Bank and just to uncover that these people are really fraudulent impostors.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • Barney states the Mayberry Bank has $50,000 in cash on hand.
  • The title is based upon the often-used quote from Shakespeare's play Hamlet, "To be or not to be."
  • Barbara Stuart who played Pat Blake had a recurring part on Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. (series) as Sergeant Carter's girlfriend, Bunny.
  • In this episode, the article misspells Barney's last name as "Fise.”
  • This episode premiered on Ron Howard's 11th birthday.
  • One of the crooks is played by Gavin MacLeod. In the Season 6 episode "The Taylors in Hollywood," MacLeod plays the actor who is going to portray Andy in the movie "Sheriff Without a Gun," which is based on Andy's career in Mayberry.

Goofs[]

  • When Andy introduces the TV writer to Floyd and Goober, he introduces Goober as "Goober Beasley.” It is not until season 7, episode 16 ‘Don’t Miss a Good Bet,’ that Goober is referred to as “Goober Pyle.” Aunt Bee mentions Goober Pyle to George Jones.
