Summary[]

With the courthouse jail full of moonshiners, Otis has to serve his time in the Taylor house, under the supervision of Aunt Bee who keeps him busy with chores.

Plot[]

The Gordon boys are brought in for moon-shining, and the four of them take up all the available cell space. They are very aggressive, as evidenced by the fact Andy injured his hand and face in the capture of the brothers. When Otis arrives, drunk, for his usual stay, the Gordon brothers all try to attack him, wrongly thinking he turned them in.

Andy has no choice but to take Otis home to let him sleep it off at the Taylor House. Several ladies are there helping Aunt Bee make cakes for the upcoming church social, so Andy tries to hide Otis in the guest room. However, Otis immediately escapes to come into the kitchen with the ladies as soon as Andy's back is turned.

Embarrassed by the incident, Aunt Bee demands in the morning that Andy take Otis back to the jail. Andy reassures her that Otis will sleep off his hangover and go home when his 24 hours are up. After Andy leaves to go on patrol, Aunt Bee goes to take Otis breakfast, but he instead asks her to keep it hot until he feels like it. Having had enough, Aunt Bee declares she is Otis' "prison warden,” drags Otis out of bed, and makes him do the laundry, scrub the floors, vacuum the carpets, chop firewood, repair broken furniture, and any other possible chore she can think of.

While Barney gives the Gordon boys some crafting activities to help with their "rehabilitation,” Andy stops by the house. Otis begs Andy to get him away from "Bloody Mary,” but Andy reminds him his 24 hours aren't up. Otis decides to try to escape; however, whether he goes through the door, the window, or tries to sneak out in the laundry truck, Aunt Bee is always one step ahead of him with more chores.

That evening, Andy comes by to 'release' Otis, and finds him freshly scrubbed and dressed up in a nice suit. Otis tells Andy that Aunt Bee made him promise to stay sober, or else she will come and get him and bring him back to "The Rock" (Otis' new name for Andy's house). Andy congratulates Aunt Bee; as he takes Otis back to the squad car, Barney runs up to inform him that the Gordon Boys used a metalcraft set he gave them to make a passkey and escape.

When Andy and Barney catch the Gordon Boys some days later, they bring them to Andy's house, where Aunt Bee is eagerly waiting with chores for them to do. Having been already warned by Otis about "Bloody Mary,” they try to escape, but Andy and Barney push them inside.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • Andy is shown with a cast on his arm, supposedly from a sprained wrist, he got bringing in the Gordon boys. This is because, in real life, Andy Griffith supposedly sprained his wrist driving his fist through a wall. The reason for this seemingly uncharacteristic outburst has been debated for years.
  • Andy wears a gun in this episode.
  • Otis says he is through with drinking at the end of this episode, but he will return to it later.

Goofs[]

  • In a blooper, as the delivery man opens the back doors of the truck for Aunt Bee who is looking for Otis, a microphone boom can be seen in the reflection of the driver's side window.

Music[]

  • Otis sings the Larry Clinton song "The Dipsy Doodle.”

Quotes[]

  • Andy: An "All Points Bulletin,” Barney? They're already here; they're captured.

  • Barney: Now I have here a leathercraft set, a woodcraft set, a metal craft set, and.. a Mr. Potato Set! Now, who wants what? Now, it makes no difference to me which one you take. Well, come on, come on. Speak up. Which one do you want?
  • Junior: I'll take the Mr. Potato set.

  • Otis: “Oh Aunt Bee don’t holler so much, please. I got a head that feels like it was in a drawer all night. Now will you go away?”
  • Aunt Bee: “Get up a prisoner and get to work!”
  • Otis: “Work!?”
  • Aunt Bee: “That’s right and you can start with your room! Clean it up!”
  • Otis: “Clean? OH! Andy! Where’s Andy? I’m a prisoner!”
