Plot[]
Opie misunderstands a comment Andy makes at the breakfast
Helen's Class
table and tells his new teacher, "old lady Crump," that according to his pa, history doesn't matter. Helen lays down the law to Sheriff Taylor and Andy responds with his own method of motivating Opie and his friends to study.

- The character of Helen Crump was supposed to be a one-shot. That is why they gave the character an unpleasant sounding name. But the producers were so impressed with Aneta Corsaut's performance and her rapport with Andy Griffith that they made her a regular cast member.
- This is the first episode that Aneta Corsaut appears as Helen Crump, Opie's teacher.
- This episode was the favorite of President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
- The Emancipation Proclamation, which Andy asks Barney about, is first mentioned on the show here.
- Johnny Paul Jason also played "Little Ricky,” Desi and Lucy's son on the I Love Lucy show.
