Summary[]

Andy and Barney help weary, footsore salesman Bert Miller set up his goods on a vacant lot.

Plot[]

A traveling salesman, Bert Miller, is getting tired of traveling. So partially to help Bert and partially to irritate Ben Weaver, the local department store owner,

Andy and Barney concoct to help Bert set up a small general goods shop on a vacant lot. With every complaint Ben gives, Andy and Barney help Bert to step it up and compete with Ben.

Eventually having enough, Ben gives in and offers a high paying job to Bert.

Notes/Trivia[]

  • Guest Star: Sterling Holloway - A veteran of numerous films, Holloway was also the voice of Winnie the Pooh and Kaa in The Jungle Book .
  • Voice actor Hal Smith, known as  Otis Campbell took over the role of Winnie the Pooh for the 1981 short Winnie the pooh discovers the seasons. He would maintain the role until Jim Cummings replaced him in 1988 for The new adventures of Winnie the Pooh and also took over most of Holloway's other voice roles.
  • For the second episode in a row, we say goodbye to a series regular. Will Wright passed away just a few months after this episode aired. The irascible character of Ben Weaver made one more appearance, however. In Season 4, Tol Avery played Ben Weaver in The Shoplifters.
  • Allusion: The title is likely a reference to William Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice
  • We find out Barney wears size 10 and a half socks (though Bert sells Barney size 11 "in case Barney is not done growing").

  • Andy sings "The Crawdad Song.” Andy and Barney both sing "Spread a Little Sunshine Every Day.” Contrary to 2 episodes ago when Barney was a terrible singer in the choir, he sang well in this episode.
