Gunnery Sergeant Vincent "Vince" Carter (b. 1929) is Gomer Pyle's drill instructor at both Camps Wilson and Henderson. He is played by actor Frank Sutton in one episode of The Andy Griffith Show and on Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C. Frank Sutton was credited as playing Sergeant Carter in all 150 episodes of Gomer Pyle; however, there were at least six episodes in which he did not appear.

Biography[]

By the time of the show's airing in 1964, Vincent Carter had been serving the Marines since 1947 and has held the rank of Gunnery Sgt. since 1962.

Sgt.Carter was born on May 4, 1929. He claimed that during his upbringing as a boy, his father exercised Corporal punishment on him for bad behavior. It was said that his father would constantly holler at him and his sister. His mother gave him a childhood nickname, "Num, Num" because these were the first words that came out of his mouth.

During the Korean War in 1953, he had adopted a girl and practically raised her during his time in Korea. After leaving Korea, Sgt. Carter and his adopted daughter had not seen eachother until her arrival in Los Angeles 12 years later in 1965.

During the war, he had fought with an old war buddy of his, Sgt. Jim "Jimbo" Mason, portrayed by Don Rickles.

  • Sgt Carter is left handed i.e. in A Star Is Not Born when he signs the autograph book;also He wears his wristwatch on his right wrist {A right handed person wears a watch on his left wrist}.
  • Despite being always adressed as 'Sergeant' (NATO Code E-5.), Carter actually holds the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (NATO Code E-7.), which is two ranks above Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps.
  • In E. Kitzes Knox's novelization of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C., Carter was known as Sergeant Harold Q. Carter.
